Paarl Coldset’s clients took home the majority of accolades at The 2012 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards. This event, formerly known as the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards, recognises newspaper excellence in advertising, printing and production, layout and typography, as well as the balanced use of pictures and graphics.
For the category of urban dailies with a circulation above 50 000, Die Burger was announced as the winner of the Frewin award, with Beeld and Daily Sun taking second and third place respectively. Die Volksblad was acknowledged as the best urban daily with a circulation below 50 000 with the McCall award, followed by Business Day and the Witness. City Press and Mail & Guardian were joint winners of the Joel Mervis award for urban weeklies irrespective of circulation, with the finalists therefore being the Rapport and the Post.
Judges of the event commented that the calibre of the winners’ stories, photographs, designs and layouts was unsurpassed by other mediums, making print media still the most robust source of news in the transforming media space.
